Polyfly and API assess the use of their pollinators in Japan
Representatives of API, Japan’s leading pollinator distributor, visited Polyfly’s facilities in Almería last week to take stock of the first commercial season of the company’s pollinators in the Japanese market.
Hiroyasu Hirasawa and Takeshi Nakano, on behalf of API, travelled to Almería to review the results of the 2025-2026 campaign together with the Polyfly team — the first full season of use of Polyfly’s pollinators in Japan, which ran from September 2025 to June of this year. During their stay, the API representatives visited Polyfly’s industrial facility in Huércal-Overa as well as the company’s headquarters at the PITA Science and Technology Park (Retamar, Almería), where both companies shared their assessment of the insects’ field performance and laid the groundwork for new joint developments to expand their presence in the country.
A shared response to Japan’s honeybee shortage
Japan has faced a worrying shortage of honeybees for several years, pushing the agricultural sector to look for viable pollination alternatives. Polyfly and API share the goal of bringing a natural pollination solution to the Japanese market, one already used successfully on crops such as melon and strawberry.
The API delegation’s visit to Almería comes just six months after the visit by Polyfly to Japan, marking a further step in strengthening collaboration and mutual understanding between the two teams.
A deep dive into Almería’s horticultural heartland
The agenda also took the API representatives to the Cajamar Las Palmerillas Experimental Station in El Ejido, a world reference in horticultural research located at the heart of the Almería “sea of plastic,” the largest concentration of greenhouses in the world. Polyfly regularly runs trials at Las Palmerillas, and the visit gave API’s representatives a first-hand look at the greenhouse environment where Polyfly develops and validates its technology before bringing it to markets such as Japan.
A partnership looking to the future
Polyfly notes that this visit made it possible to review, first-hand, the results of this first season in Japan, and to keep building, together with API, a pollination solution tailored to the needs of the Japanese market.
With this meeting, Polyfly reinforces its international expansion strategy in one of the world’s most demanding horticultural markets, consolidating its relationship with API as its reference partner for pollinator distribution in Japan.
